As the hot summer months quickly approach, many of us need to rethink our strategies for carrying concealed. With the summer heat, it becomes more uncomfortable to wear light jackets or other layers of clothing that easily conceal our handguns. The following tips will help you keep your CCW comfortably concealed even in the summer heat.
1 – Wear Loose-Fitting Shirts
If you’re carrying concealed, you need to wear clothing that has enough room for your weapon. It might be tempting to wear tight-fitting tank tops or t-shirts, but with most holsters, these shirts will make it obvious that you’re packing heat. Consider wearing a short-sleeve button-up shirt, loose-fitting t-shirt or a polo shirt to ensure your weapon stays concealed.
2 – Size Up in Pants
The same rule applies for pants. Tight-fitting pants will show the outline of your weapon. Wear loose-fitting pants. It may be necessary to size up to make sure your CCW is comfortably concealed.
3 – Switch to a Smaller CCW
Sometimes it’s worth it to switch to a smaller micro or sub-compact CCW during the summer months. These pistols may not have the stopping power of a larger firearm, but they’re better than leaving your bulky weapon at home. Smaller pistols tend to be lighter and easier to conceal than larger pistols, so they may be a good option during the sweltering summer months.
4 – Pay Attention to Your Posture
The way we move has an effect on the concealability of a CCW. When lifting an object, bend at the knees instead of at the waist. When you bend over, your firearm may become visible. Squatting is a great way to prevent printing when you’re wearing lighter clothing.
5 – Use a Mirror
Before you leave home, check yourself out in a full-length mirror from multiple angles and positions to ensure your firearm is adequately concealed. Taking this final step before you leave the house will reassure you throughout the day that your weapon is not noticeable to others.
