Do you know the essential parts of gun range etiquette? Every range has posted rules for everyone to follow. They are for everyone’s safety, but there are unwritten rules to follow as well. Shooters are a great bunch of people. Don’t be rude at the range.

How to Talk with Other Shooters at the Range
Too many people make the mistake of going to firing range practice and leaving without even talking to anyone. There are benefits to at least know the other people at the range with you. Don’t be afraid to ask if you have any questions about the range policies or about your firearm. The other shooters won’t mind if you ask for their thoughts. It’s always better to ask before you try something you’re not sure about and possibly put yourself in danger.

You can also get great advice from other shooters. Trading ideas for improving accuracy or other gun models is a great way to learn. Take some time to compliment the other shooters or ask for their advice. Everyone likes to get compliments and they will be happy to lend advice. They may also let you try out their guns. This is a great way to get to know a new gun without buying it.

Don’t make the mistake of acting like you know it all. Even professional shooters and law enforcement want to learn and improve. Acting like you are experienced when you really aren’t can lead to dangerous outcomes. Everyone started as a beginner, so there’s nothing wrong with asking questions.

How to Stand When You’re at the Firing Range
Always face forward when you’re at the gun range. Many people continue to hold their gun when they turn to talk to their friends and other shooters and this is a huge mistake. Not only are you putting other people in danger, but you’re showing them that you don’t know what you’re doing. Face forward toward the target any time you have a gun in your hand. There’s nothing wrong with talking over your groupings or ammo choices, just do it after you set the gun down.

Have you ever seen anyone making the mistake of not respecting the line? Some shooters want to stand far behind the line when they fire and this is a big mistake. When another shooter realizes that you are shooting from a place behind them they are not going to be happy. You’re putting them in danger and not using good etiquette either.

This rule is probably posted, but people still make the mistake of going over the designated line at the range. When you’re at a more free outdoor range that doesn’t necessarily have monitors or staff, this can be a big problem. Always keep the other shooters in mind and stay at the same distance as them. If you’d like to try out some drills that require movement, don’t be afraid to ask other shooters if they mind.

How to Transport Your Gun to the Gun Range
Never walk onto the range with a gun in your hand. Always use a case or bag when you are transporting your gun and ammunition. It is the safe and respectful way to bring your equipment to the range. When you arrive in your bay or at the loading table, then you can remove your gun from the carrying case.

Even when it’s in a bag or case, a gun that is loaded is very dangerous. Make triple sure that your firearm is unloaded before transporting it to and from the gun range. The firing range is supposed to be a safe and secure place to practice shooting. Don’t make the mistake of improper carry and end up putting other people in danger.

Follow these easy tips for gun range etiquette and you’ll end up getting much more than just a practice session out of your visit. The other shooters there will respect you and welcome you when you return.
