A man with a concealed carry permit not only saved the day, but saved a life recently.

The heart-stopping incident occurred in Evansville, Illinois this month. If it wasn’t for a good Samaritan putting his concealed carry permit to good use, two robbery suspects would’ve easily killed one of their victims.

Two women were having lunch at a food court inside Eastland Mall when two 20-year-old women were looking for easy marks to make their move.

Betty Jones, 66, and Myrna Chumley, 82, were having lunch at Eastland Mall’s food court when the two young women approached them and ran off with their purses. Not the type to sit idly by, Jones and Chumley chased after the robbers … both far younger. In fact, 82-year-old Chumley managed to catch up with them in the parking lot.

A number of concerned witnesses got involved and tried blocking the suspects from leaving, but a man by the name of David Roberts put a kibosh to the whole thing.

As the robbery suspects attempted to flee the scene, one of the car doors hit Jones, knocking her to the ground. Roberts fired his weapon multiple times at the vehicle’s tires and literally stopped the robbers in their tracks.

Needless to say, Jones credits Roberts for saving her life.

Evansville police officers confirmed that Roberts had a valid concealed carry permit — and had justifiable reason to use deadly force. As the state statute reads, citizens are allowed to use deadly force when he or she “reasonably believes that the force is necessary to prevent serious bodily injury to the person or a third person.”

Deener and Blair have been charged with strong arm robbery, criminal recklessness with a vehicle, theft, and hit and run. Roberts, being a concealed carry permit holder, helped saved an elderly woman’s life and was hailed a community hero.

This incident highlights the need for practical training. It’s more important than ever to include real-world scenarios in your firing range practice.

Criminals who don’t care about taking another human life won’t give you the time to draw and aim cleanly. Practice firing at targets of different sizes and at different distances to build your effectiveness.
