Firearm training can get really expensive, really fast. Range time and boxes of ammo can start to add up, and this might deter you from getting regular practice.  A laser training pistol is an excellent way to save on money while still taking the time to sharpen your draw sequence, sighting, and carry techniques. We decided to try one out.

The LaserLyte Trigger Tyme training pistol is a great option for those looking to improve their skills without breaking the bank. Weighing in at 15 ounces and measuring 6 inches in length, the compact version we used closely resembles a Glock 42 in size. The 5.5 lb trigger pull is realistic and has a take-up and break action that is pretty spot on.

Benefits of Laser Pistol Training
It took us less than ten minutes to open up and start using the Trigger Tyme  pistol. It takes a few minutes to assemble the  LT Pro laser due to its tiny parts. After assembly it fits comfortably into the muzzle. It operates on sound and, upon trigger pull, flashes a red dot to mark the area where a bullet would have made impact. It barely extends out from the muzzle and didn’t interfere with draws from a holster or pocket.

The red dot flashes just long enough after the trigger pull to let the shooter know how to adjust for the next shot. It did an excellent job of giving instant accuracy feedback as we tried our Isosceles and Weaver stances, as well as one handed and from the hip. The accuracy feedback on these was valuable, as many inexperienced shooters may think that defensive shooting is much easier than it really is.

Our kit included a Reaction Tyme target to use in training scenarios. The target is pretty small, a plastic box measuring about 2.5 inches in diameter. It’s easily portable and can be set up in a variety of locations around the home or office. We set it up on bookshelves and desks without any problems. It flashes red and makes a beep when the target is hit, making it easy to know when you’re accurate even from a distance of around 40 feet.

We appreciated the target’s Reaction Time mode, in which the target beeps every 7 seconds or so and requires a quick draw and fire on target within 3 seconds to register. This gave us good practice drawing and re-holstering quickly. Setting this target up at entry points around the house can really help to familiarize yourself with what would be necessary to protect yourself from an intruder.

This LaserLyte Training Tyme kit would be a great way to familiarize a young or inexperienced shooter with stance, grip, and holster drawing without needing to use ammo or travel to the range.

Limitations of Laser Pistol Training
The feeling of using the laser pistol system isn’t anywhere close to firing the real thing. There is no recoil or sound, two huge elements of the firing experience. This type of training should not totally replace live fire practice. Part of regular practice is becoming familiar with the kick and sound percussion of gunfire.

Several of our staff who used the laser pistol commented that there was no option to practice disengaging the safety and no recoil to compensate for. It should be known that there are no moving parts on this training pistol and it can’t accept any ammunition. There is also no way to practice reloading or handling cartridge malfunctions, two crucial skills to master.

Regular practice with a handgun is incredibly important if you want to remain skilled and safe while you carry.  Set up a target or two at critical spots at home or the office and run through some scenarios to speed up reaction time. Practice your draw with this from a concealed holster while wearing a variety of clothes. Maintaining a high level of skill and firearm familiarity is crucial to staying alert and staying alive.
