Should You Consider Off-Body Concealed Carry?

Many gun owners recommend carrying a concealed weapon on your body. After all, when a gun is literally on our person, we are assured that we will be able to access it quickly and easily should we need it. Plus, if you carry the weapon in the same position on a regular basis and have trained extensively in drawing your firearm from that position, you are more likely to be physically and mentally prepared if you are faced with a threat.

That said, there are legitimate reasons to carry your concealed weapon off-body. It is important that we are realistic with our ability to carry concealed every day. Many people find that they need to get comfortable with carrying their CCW in several different ways to accommodate for a number of factors, such as work clothes, exercise clothes, changes in weather and travel plans.

There are a number of bags available on the market that are specifically designed to conceal a weapon. Purses, backpacks, briefcases and messenger bags can be great options if circumstances prevent you from being able to carry your CCW on your body. However, it is important to recognize the risks associated with off-body carry.

1 – Will You Have Your CCW if You Need It?

One of the biggest drawbacks of off-body carry is that the bag may not be in reach when you need it. When a gun is in a holster on your body, you know exactly where it is and how to reach it. If you come face to face with an attacker on a quick bathroom break and your CCW is in a bag in your office, you will regret your decision not to have your bag on your person.

2 – Can Others Get to Your Gun?

Unless you carry your bag on your body at all times, you run the risk of others rummaging in your bag and discovering your CCW. This situation is especially dangerous if there are curious kids nearby. Further, if your bag is stolen by an opportunistic criminal, you’ll not only be faced with the inconvenience of losing your stuff—you’ll also be without your CCW, leaving you vulnerable.

3 – How Easy Is It to Access Your Gun?

One of the biggest criticisms of off-body carry is ease of access. Of course it’s great to have your CCW close by in case you face an unexpected threat. However, it is more difficult to draw a weapon from a purse or backpack than it is to draw a weapon from a holster on your body. When faced with a life or death situation, every second counts.

Take the time to decide which methods of concealed carry are best for you. Either way, don’t go out until you’ve been to the range and practiced drawing, carrying, and firing until you’re completely comfortable.
