This saddens us. We’ve just learned that in Cleveland, Ohio, a concealed carry holder was shot and killed during a robbery attempt on October 9. We write blog posts about how to handle your gun and how to mentally prepare yourself if you’re ever assaulted, but sometimes reality just does not go the same way that you imagine it will during training. For 24-year-old Justin Blanton, that means he lost his life trying to defend himself.

Of course, we don’t have much information about this incident, but here’s what news reports in Ohio have to say: An armed suspect tried to rob Blanton near East 93rd and Cedar and Quincy in Cleveland. Blanton pulled out his gun and both Blanton and the suspect fired.

Blanton was struck in the back. No report on whether the other shooter was wounded or not. Blanton managed to walk to an emergency room clinic where he died on October 10. News reports say the suspect is still on the loose. We checked online for other news reports and found that Blanton had arranged to meet someone about 7:30 pm to buy a cell phone from someone. Apparently, it was that seller who pulled out a gun. Over a cell phone, folks. This report says that Blanton had a valid concealed carry permit.

Folks, having a gun and a permit is only the beginning. Train train train, so that if something like this happens to you, you are as prepared as you can possibly be. You just never know when you’re going to be faced with a threat that can change your life in a moment.
