We recently reported on the danger cues a police officer looks for, particularly when they’re encountering someone at a traffic stop. Today we found this news report of an Allegheny County (Pennsylvania) sheriff demonstrating how people should handle a traffic stop with a permitted firearm in the vehicle.  It’s a short video at just a couple of minutes, but it hits on the important things to remember if you’re pulled over and you have a permitted firearm.

Here are the important steps:

  1. When the police office approaches the car and asks that you get your license and registration, inform the polie officer that you have a permit. Inform them even though it’s not required that you reveal your permit, and offer to get the permit at the same time that you get your other paperwork.
  2. Keep your hands on the steering wheel.
  3. Don’t reach for the gun.
  4. Stay calm.

Of course, there are other behaviors the police look for, that we went over pretty thoroughly in the “Danger Cues” article, so read over those and keep them in mind in case you’re ever stopped. You’ll know the best way to handle a traffic stop.
