Purchasing a handgun on a budget can be a challenge. In your search to find that perfect gun in your price range, have you ever considered seeking out a second-hand firearm? There are many reputable retailers that offer used guns at lower prices, and with some basic knowledge, you can make an excellent, quality selection. Here are expert tips on the best way to buy a used gun.

Daniel Bach of AZ Guns in Chandler, Arizona, offers some sound advice when it comes to the best way to buy a used gun. Evaluating used or pre-owned firearms by looking at a few specific things. “We refer to pre-owned firearms as guns that were previously owned, but never fired; used guns have been fired,” Bach says.

• Ask permission to evaluate the gun top to bottom. It should go without saying that you will use your best safety practices when evaluating the handgun in the store. Verify the gun is unloaded.

• Look it over for outward damage, Keep in mind that minor nicks and scratches don’t necessarily mean the handgun won’t fire well. But if you want something shiny and new looking, that’s fine, too.

• Does it feel too loose? Is there any clatter from its moving parts? “Evaluate the gun as a whole—the barrel, the chamber, get a good feel for it. Check the wear points and function, check for fouling and burs, do a thorough check of the safety systems,” says Bach.

• Some stores will allow dry fire, so, with permission, dry fire the handgun. Is the action smooth? How does the trigger feel?

• Ask if there have been any modifications to the gun. If so, you may want to proceed with caution. Insist upon documentation for each alteration. Bach says, “After-market modifications can seriously compromise the safety of the gun, so I would be extremely cautious. You want to be sure you avoid what could be a catastrophic malfunction.”

• Investigate guns with good resale value and common caliber. You may not want to resell the handgun, but if you do, its value will hold more steadily if you choose a quality, well-known brand.

• If it’s priced too low, be suspicious. There may be an inherent flaw in the piece. In general, you can expect to get what you pay for.

• Some retailers offer return policies and some offer warranties. B certain to check with the place of business before you being your search if that appeals to you.
