The Battle Between Marijuana Users and Gun Rights

As marijuana possession and use becomes less punishable by law, more people are having to worry about whether their right to own a gun is safe. Hawaii in particular has been vocal about wanting people to choose between being a medical marijuana patient or being a gun owner. For now, it looks like things will remain the same.

In December, the Honolulu Police Department issued a statement that it is reviewing its policy of forcing medical marijuana patients to surrender their firearms. So far it is denying gun permits to medical marijuana patients who apply for new weapons, however.

Marijuana has been legal in Hawaii since 2000, so this is an issue that’s been going on in Hawaii longer than others, such as California, which just legalized medical marijuana as of January 1, 2018.

We hope they figure this out soon, because denying gun owners the right to access a healthy alternative to pharmaceutical medicine, while alternatively preventing people who use marijuana from being able to defend themselves with a weapon is an asinine policy which is not based on common sense.
