You have your concealed carry license/permit. You’re excited and confident. You walk outside with your gun well concealed and have no fear. The only thing is that you can’t bring your concealed carry everywhere you go. Wait, what?

Yes, it’s true. Just because you have a concealed carry license/permit, it doesn’t mean you can bring your weapon everywhere. There are some establishments that prohibit weapons. And the laws vary from state to state. As a concealed carrier, it is your responsibility to know what the regulations are where you live. If you choose to carry somewhere where it is posted not to carry, it is your responsibility to know what the possible legal ramifications are if you carry against a posted sign.

The following are some of the places you cannot concealed carry:
Bars
Carrying concealed in bars is not generally a wise idea. Each state has laws about this. For instance, in Arizona you can carry a firearm into a bar. But generally speaking it is safe to assume that you can’t. And maybe shouldn’t. When people start drinking, they aren’t always easygoing. Fights break out, and if someone gets mad enough, a gun may be pulled. Bar owners do not want that liability, so they do not want guns in their establishments.

Hospitals
Hospitals are high stress areas. Many people who visit them are suffering from mental health disorders. For this reason, guns are not allowed. Hospitals want to ensure everyone who is inside remain calm, safe, and comfortable. While that may mean concealed carry for some of them, it’s not what others think, so sometimes, it just needs to be compromised.

Schools
This is great debate across college campuses in this nation. With all of the shootings that occurred on campuses, many students want concealed carry permits/licenses. Unfortunately, many schools do not have the same beliefs about the safety of carrying, so until that perspective is changed, there’s not much that can be done about it. Here’s an article outlining 10 reasons why we think campuses should allow guns.

Government Buildings
This is especially true of courts. Federal law prohibits guns in post offices, regardless of concealed carry permits. With the arguments and volatile emotions that are often seen in courthouses, the nation has decided that concealed carry is not a good idea. Unfortunately, the poor decisions of others has kept responsible gun owners from protecting themselves.

Airplanes
You have to check in all weapons. Again, this is due to the threat of someone, whether it be a terrorist or just a mentally unstable person in general, pulling a gun while the plane is in flight. It is ok by TSA to check guns for transport, for instance if you are moving, but the regulations must be followed and the gun must be packed properly and unloaded.

Some Businesses Who Choose Not to Allow It
Some business, most often those with owners who are against guns, have decided to make their businesses gun-free zones. If someone concealed carry in those businesses, and the owners discover it, they could be arrested.

It’s a good idea to look for a sign. If there is no sign, you don’t have to worry about it. The businesses are required to post a sign if they have a gun-free zone.  Many gun owners feel that there should be no gun-free zones at all. But at this point, the law allows businesses to make that individual decision. As a responsible gun owner, you must abide by all of the rules and laws of concealed carry. Abiding by where you cannot concealed carry is one of those, so try to accept it and be thankful you can carry in most areas.
