Before you carry concealed, you need to make sure you can draw your weapon quickly, smoothly and safely in case you’re faced with a potentially life-threatening situation.

To improve your draw, make sure you have proper equipment and that you’re physically able to access your firearm quickly and easily should you need it. Most importantly, keep training to improve your skills.

1 – Proper Equipment

The equipment you use is vital to ensuring a smooth draw when you carry concealed. The firearm you carry, the holster you keep it in and the clothing you wear all have an effect on the speed and smoothness at which you can draw your CCW.

Many people find that the clothing they wear may require them to use different holsters, depending on the style or season.

2 – Location of Firearm

Every second matters when you’re faced with a threat. It is important that you are prepared to quickly and smoothly draw your weapon from wherever it is located on your body, depending on the type of holster.

A draw from a shoulder holster requires a different technique than a draw from an ankle holster. Practice your draw from all the different types of holsters you use. If you find that a certain holster position doesn’t work well for you, don’t use it!

Find a different holster that allows you to access your firearm quickly should you need it.

3 – Training

If you’re planning to carry a concealed weapon, you need to make sure you get plenty of practice drawing your weapon. After all, your life may depend on it.

Regular practice drawing your weapon will build your muscle memory so that it will be almost instinctual to draw your weapon in a self-defense situation.

Use your dry firing practice to draw your weapon from under your clothing. You don’t want to find yourself faced with a threat only to have your CCW get tangled in your shirt when you attempt to grab it.

Start slowly to get a feel for how your weapon slides out of your holster, and gradually increase your speed once you master the technique.
