Tarak Andrew Underiner was found unresponsive at a Columbus, Ohio, residence. His obituary showed a bright, smiling, handsome young man with dark hair and dark eyes who was only 20 years old.

He was a junior at Ohio State University, where he was studying marketing and Spanish. The obituary doesn’t say what happened to this young man, other than that his “time on earth was cut short.” But other reports show that guns, drugs and cash were seized from a student residence, where Underiner was shot multiple times on the night of January 5.

While this may seem like just another drug robbery gone wrong, there was something more unique about Tarak Underiner. He was a vocal concealed carry advocate and had numerous guns. His roommates have been cleared of suspicion, and while no suspects have been identified at this point, police have stated that this was not a random act.

Underiner testified at the Ohio Statehouse in December 2o16 in support of the Republican-backed House Bill 48 and the right to concealed carry on campus.  During his testimony, Underiner said, “College campuses and the areas surrounding them present environments rich with potential victims.  They’re willing to gamble we’re unarmed and it pays off.”

Unfortunately, in his own case, the fact that he was armed did not play out in his favor. Even someone with a concealed carry permit and training can be taken by surprise. And in the comfort of your own home, it is easy to feel more at ease than you might on the street. We’re dismayed that drugs seemed to have played a role in this, and we’re equally dismayed that the students have lost a concealed carry on campus advocate who seemed to have the world ahead of him.
