Anyone who has stopped by a local sheriff’s department to renew their permit of start the application process has probably encountered long wait times and a staff that is having trouble keeping up. Due to the requirements of many states, handgun safety training are increasing too.

Populations are rising in certain areas as people search out new work and living opportunities, and that boosts the number of permit holders naturally. But, current residents are seeing the nature of their neighborhoods change too, and are getting certified and trained to protect themselves.

In Sacramento County California, the Sheriff’s office is approving about 95% of the applications, and permits have risen 15 times since 2009. This number leads all other California counties.

In Oregon, permits in Multnomah County have risen 60% in the past five years. The county’s 22,992 permit holders are most likely reacting to increases in population and recent violent events in the headlines.

And across the country in North Dakota, permits have doubled in the past four years. According to the Washington Times, the state is leading the country in population growth thanks to its oil fields. They recently reported that North Dakota has 38,898 people who hold concealed weapon permits, up from about 16,000 in 2011.

These dramatic increases only reinforce the need for people to not only stay informed on local laws and regulations, but also keep up regular practice at the firing range.
