Regardless of personal opinions on gun ownership, one important fact to keep in mind is that guns do exist. Odds are that at some point, most kids eventually come into contact with a firearm outside of adult supervision.

The best way to protect kids is to educate them on what to do if they find themselves in that situation. The answer is to get away quickly and tell an adult. It is a good idea to educate kids on gun safety whether or not you are a supporter of gun ownership. The reality is that kids are getting
training from TV, movies and even video games. Often time’s kids will emulate what they see on TV, and this can and has led to disastrous situations.

It is advisable to go over gun safety so that kids understand the consequences of what can happen when handling firearms. In many cases this can prevent needless tragedy. A good rule of thumb is to start talking to kids about gun safety about the time that you are comfortable with kids being outside of your direct supervision. Kids can be expected to follow your directions about gun safety as soon as they are mature enough to understand the concept of death.

Teaching kids gun safety when they are old enough to be outside parental supervision is a good idea in case they come into contact with a firearm at some point. The sad fact is that not every person is responsible with their firearm. It is better to educate kids than to roll the dice and hope they don’t come into contact with a firearm.
