Inside the Waistband Holsters vs. Clipdraw

How you decide to carry your concealed handgun is up to you. It’s more about preference and comfort, than anything else. Most people choose between an Inside the Waistband (IWB) holster or clip draw. There are several factors that influence a gun owner’s choice, such as size and shape of the gun, size and shape of the person, and the types of clothing the carrier wears.

The Differences Between the IWB and Clipdraw

An IWB holds the gun inside of your waistband on your pants. Many people prefer this method of carrying because they are covering the gun with their pants and shirt. It can also feel better because the holster tends to hold the gun securely and covers the trigger, which can be a concern for those who may feel uncomfortable having the trigger accessible at all times.

There are also Outside of the Waistband (OWB) holsters, which hold the gun outside of the pants. This is an option in open carry states.

The clipdraw is exactly what you probably imagine. There’s a clip on the holster and you simply clip it onto your waistband. This means you can easily just place it inside or outside of your pants. Some people love this because they just easily remove the gun at a moment’s notice, versus having to deal with a holster that can sometimes get in the way of getting the gun out of it. However, some people prefer not to use the clip draw because it seems frightening to have a gun completely exposed in or outside of the pants, which could lead to misfiring. The other reason some people don’t prefer the clipdraw is because they fear that gun will fall when they move around. Since it’s just a clip, bending or stooping could push the gun up and out of the waistband, causing the person to lose the gun.

How to Decide Which One Is Best for You

It can be difficult to decide which one you should use. Often times, gun owners find out by simply purchasing each one and using it. This is really the only way to find out if you like one over the other. If the expense isn’t something you want to take on, see if you can borrow a friend’s IWB or clipdraw for a while. This will give you a chance to try it out before you purchase.
