On the morning of March 13, a hatchet-wielding man in a mask reportedly burst into a 7-Eleven store in Burien, Wash., and started to attack the clerk.
The attack could have seriously injured the clerk if not for the quick thinking of a 60-year-old patron who pulled out his CCW and fatally shot the attacker.
The 7-Eleven clerk suffered minor cuts on his abdomen but was otherwise not harmed in the attack. The attacker, described as a man in his 40s, died at the scene.
Neither the attacker nor the customer has been identified, but the customer has been hailed as a hero. Authorities have confirmed that he has a valid license to carry a concealed weapon.
“This could have been disastrous,” King County Sheriff Sgt. Cindi West said. “Had this guy not shot, who knows what would have happened? We might have a dead clerk right now, and instead we have a dead bad guy.”
Sgt. West said that the incident will be fully investigated, but said that there was currently no indication that the 60-year-old shooter engaged in any wrongdoing. She said he is being considered a Good Samaritan.
“In fact, he probably saved a life in this case,” West said.
Because of the quick thinking of a customer with a concealed carry permit, the 7-Eleven clerk’s life has been saved—and potentially the lives of other customers who were at the store during the attack. The situation could have turned out much differently if the customer did not have his weapon that day.
