New Concealed Carry “Smartphone” Gun Grabs Attention

A new style of concealed carry gun that folds up into the size of a smartphone could be on sale later this year.

The double barreled .380 derringer, made by a Minnesota startup called Ideal Conceal, folds into a palm-sized square that can be easily concealed in a pocket. Its slim design is meant to provide a versatile concealed carry option for all types of people who want a lightweight, easy-to-carry option for their CCW.

“From soccer moms to professionals of every type, this gun allows you the option of not being a victim,” the Ideal Conceal website states. The company’s design is geared toward today’s increased demand for concealed carry weapons that are easy to carry and conceal.

Although the Ideal Conceal pistol is not the first folding pistol to be introduced, it may be the first that is designed so that it does not look like a gun when it is folded.

“Ingeniously designed to resemble a smartphone, yet with one click of the safety it opens and is ready to fire,” the company’s website says. “Smartphones are everywhere, so your new pistol will easily blend in with today’s environment. In its locked position it will be virtually undetectable because it hides in plain sight.”

According to a recent Fox News article, Senator Charles Schumer (D- N.Y.) has called for an investigation into the gun and possible legal violations. He spoke out in the past against similar products, calling them a threat to law enforcement and children who may not be able to tell the item is a firearm.

A recent article on CNN Money states that gun owners would most likely still be required to have a concealed carry permit to carry the Ideal Conceal folding gun and that it can’t be fired when it’s in a folded position.

While there’s nothing wrong with new innovations in the firearms industry, it’s important to remember that you should test and do your research before carrying anything. The mini derringer style pistol has been around for a long time, but there’s something to be said for a concealed handgun that can do more than just look good.

This type of firearm increases that danger that it will be misused while showing it off and only makes it easier for untrained people to conceal a firearm in public places.
