I’ve never been to the Winchester Mystery House but I’ve always thought it would be cool to visit.
The house has a mysterious back story. The heiress of the Winchester rifle fortune and widow of William Winchester, Sarah Winchester, believes that she is haunted by the souls of all the people who have been killed by the rifle over the years. The house was initially a small, two-story farmhouse but in order to keep the curse of the rifle at bay, Sarah believed that she needed to continuously build onto the house. Before she died in 1922, Sarah apparently believed what a psychic told her, which was that if she ever stopped constructing the house that she would die. She spent her $20 million inheritance after the death of her husband continuously adding rooms to the house, with work continuing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year for the next 38 years.
In a movie that is now being previewed, Helen Mirren plays Sarah. The movie is given a supernatural, spooky twist which you can see in the trailer below. I wanted to get a less dramatized tour of the mansion, and found this tour video of footage provided by the Winchester House itself. Compare that with the trailer!
