Ruger Announces Safety Recall of Mark IVs

Ruger has announced a safety recall and notice affecting all Mark IV pistols, including the 22/45 models that were manufactured prior to June 1, 2017. These models have the potential to discharge unintentionally if the safety is not used correctly.

The announcement says, in particular, that if the user pulls the trigger while the safety lever is midway between the “safe” and “fire” positions, the pistol may not fire if the trigger is pulled. However, if the trigger is released and the safety lever is then fully engaged in the fire position, it may fire, even if the trigger is no longer being pulled.

Ruger’s announcement states that only a small percentage of the Mark IVs are affected, but the numbers are worrisome enough that they are recalling the pistols to retrofit them with an updated safety mechanism. The announcement states that owners of these pistols should not use their pistols if they have not yet had the safety updated, or are not 100% sure that your model is not subject to the recall.

Mark I, Mark II, and Mark III pistols are not affected by this recall.
