As of August 1, 2017, people with a handgun license will be able to carry a concealed weapon on campus. Texas Southmost College, TSC, is following the Texas Senate Bill 11, which allows the carrying of concealed weapons on campus. The law took effect on August 1, 2016 for all institutions of higher education except for community colleges. The effective date for TSC and other public community colleges across the state to allow concealed campus carry is August 1, 2017.

Previously, Texas public community colleges were not allowed to have guns on campus. In September 2016, TSC gathered faculty, staff, students and a campus security officer to create a campus carry committee. The group convened to hear the concerns about concealed carry from campus and community members.
