Texans will soon be taking advantage of a new law allowing them to carry their handguns openly, but not at the popular burger joint Whataburger.

According to Preston Atkinson, Whataburger president and chief executive officer, patrons and employees have complained of feeling uncomfortable when they see a visible firearm on anyone that isn’t a law enforcement officer. The ban is meant to keep all customers feeling safe and happy.

Under the new Texas law, businesses that forbid their customers from open carry must post clear signs declaring the ban. With 780 locations across the country, Whataburger’s decision may have bigger effects for gun owners.

If the trend continues, popular restaurants, coffee shops, and large grocery store chains may follow suit. Businesses claim that their decision to ban firearms on the premises is completely driven by a desire to satisfy nervous customers and employees.

Larger businesses are feeling pressure from anti-gun groups to ban firearms, and they may cave to the pressure. It’s now up to concerned gun owners to voice their concern that these businesses may now become targets for more crime and violence.

As always, individuals who are not informed of current gun legislation and unfamiliar with the safe and responsible use of guns for self-defense feel scared of what they don’t understand.

In cases like these, it falls to the concealed carry community to educate others in safe and responsible carry. A well-trained individual carrying concealed is an asset to their community, and shouldn’t be shut out from enjoying local businesses because of their choice.
