The video below shows that you can be robbed at gunpoint while using the ATM, even in your car. He steals her money and then locks her in the trunk.

Don’t be a victim. Here’s how to protect yourself at an ATM.

Before You Use the ATM

  • Take a look around you and make sure the area is safe. Use an ATM that has plenty of light and some foot traffic nearby.
  • Show confidence. Walk with your shoulders high and your eyes open to what’s happening around you. Do what you need to do and move on.
  • Remove your headphones, stop texting, and hang up the phone. Thieves look for victims that are distracted and not paying attention.
  • Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right or a person nearby looks shady, stop what you’re doing and leave the area.

Carrying concealed means that you’re have protection if your life is threatened, but that protection doesn’t mean that you should go into situations that seem unsafe.

While You’re Making Your Withdrawal

  • Bring a friend. Ask them to turn away from the ATM and be observant of the scene while you use the machine.
  • If someone does attempt to rob you, stay calm. Your life is not worth the money you are withdrawing.
  • Only draw your handgun if you feel that you can do it safely and shoot accurately. When driving, keep your handgun accessible, the laws of your state permit it.

The same rules apply to using an ATM in your car. If possible, don’t put the car in park. Leave your foot on the brake so that if you need to pull away quickly you can.
